Benefits of Fajr prayer hadith: whoever prays the two cool prayers will enter Paradise

Benefits of Fajr Prayer: 5 Authentic Hadith on Fajr and Asr

Fajr comes when sleep is sweetest. Asr comes when the day’s work is at its busiest. That is exactly why these two prayers are tested, and why the Prophet ﷺ gave them such a promise. Here are the benefits of Fajr prayer, and its partner Asr, in five authentic hadith from Bukhari and Muslim.

1. The two cool prayers lead to Paradise

Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

مَنْ صَلَّى الْبَرْدَيْنِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ

“Whoever prays the two cool prayers (‘Asr and Fajr) will enter Paradise.”

Bukhari 574 · Narrated by Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

“The two cool prayers” (al-bardayn) are Fajr and Asr, prayed at the cool ends of the day. The Federal Territories Mufti Office, citing Badr al-Din al-‘Ayni, explains that most scholars understood it this way (Irsyad al-Hadith 483). Commentators also note that whoever guards these two, the hardest of the five, will find it easier to guard the rest.

Try this: treat Fajr and Asr as the two anchors of your day. If they are safe, build the other three around them.

2. Protection from the Fire

‘Umarah ibn Ruwaybah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:

لَنْ يَلِجَ النَّارَ أَحَدٌ صَلَّى قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ غُرُوبِهَا

“No one who prays before the rising of the sun and before its setting will enter the Fire.”

Muslim 634a · Narrated by ‘Umarah ibn Ruwaybah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

The narrator explained that this means Fajr and Asr. In the same report, a man from Basra asked whether he had really heard it from the Prophet ﷺ. When he said yes, the man replied that he had heard it too: his own ears heard it and his heart kept it. Two witnesses to one promise.

Try this: if Fajr is hard for you, start small: sleep a little earlier tonight and put the alarm out of reach. Our article on what to do if you slept through Fajr shows the Prophet’s ﷺ own example.

3. When the angels gather

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Angels come to you in turns by night and by day, and they all gather at the Fajr and ‘Asr prayers. Then those who spent the night with you ascend, and Allah asks them, though He knows best about them, ‘In what state did you leave My servants?’ They reply, ‘When we left them they were praying, and when we came to them they were praying.’”

Bukhari 555 · Narrated by Abu Hurairah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

Fajr and Asr are the two moments when the angels of the night and the angels of the day meet, and the report taken back to Allah is about what His servants were doing. To be found in salah at the changeover is to have both groups of angels testify for you.

These same two prayers are linked to the greatest reward of all, seeing Allah in Paradise (Bukhari 554, explained in Seeing Allah in Jannah).

Try this: before you start Asr, pause and remember who is gathering. It changes how you stand.

4. Under the protection of Allah

Jundab ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

مَنْ صَلَّى الصُّبْحَ فَهُوَ فِي ذِمَّةِ اللَّهِ فَلاَ يَطْلُبَنَّكُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ ذِمَّتِهِ بِشَىْءٍ فَيُدْرِكَهُ فَيَكُبَّهُ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ

“Whoever prays the morning prayer is under the protection of Allah. So let not Allah demand anything from you in connection with His protection, for whoever He demands anything of in connection with His protection, He will seize him and throw him on his face into the fire of Hell.”

Muslim 657a · Narrated by Jundab ibn ‘Abdullah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

HadeethEnc (hadith 5435) explains that whoever prays Fajr is guarded and protected by Allah, and that the warning is against breaking that protection, whether by neglecting Fajr or by harming someone who has prayed it. Sunnah.com’s English adds “(in congregation)”, which is not in this Arabic wording; the reward of praying Fajr and Isha in congregation comes in another hadith (Muslim 656, in Praying in Congregation).

Try this: start your day knowing you are in Allah’s care. Pray Fajr before you check your phone.

5. Sitting in his place until sunrise

Simak ibn Harb asked Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) whether he used to sit with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, “Yes, often,” and described his habit after Fajr:

كَانَ لاَ يَقُومُ مِنْ مُصَلاَّهُ الَّذِي يُصَلِّي فِيهِ الصُّبْحَ أَوِ الْغَدَاةَ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ فَإِذَا طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَامَ

He used not to get up from the place where he prayed the morning (Fajr) prayer until the sun had risen. When the sun had risen, he would get up.

Muslim 670 · Narrated by Jabir ibn Samurah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

After Fajr, the Prophet ﷺ would stay where he had prayed until the sun had risen. Jabir went on to describe how the Companions would sit and talk, even laughing about the days before Islam, while he smiled with them. The time after Fajr was calm, unhurried and shared.

Try this: on a day off, stay seated after Fajr until sunrise with the morning adhkar or some Quran. Even ten quiet minutes is a good start.

Bringing it together: the benefits of Fajr prayer

Taken together, these hadith describe five benefits of Fajr prayer, most of them shared with Asr: a path to Paradise, safety from the Fire, the witness of the angels, the protection of Allah, and a calm start to the day in the footsteps of the Prophet ﷺ. Our article on praying on time covers the warning about missing Asr.

Reflection: it is no accident that the two prayers with the greatest promises come at the two hardest moments of the day. Fajr asks us to leave the warmest sleep; Asr asks us to step away from work that is not yet finished. Both ask the same question: what comes first? Whoever answers it twice a day, every day, has already answered it for the whole day.
