1. The veil is lifted: the dearest gift of all

“When those deserving of Paradise would enter Paradise, the Blessed and the Exalted would ask: Do you wish Me to give you anything more? They would say: Hast Thou not brightened our faces? Hast Thou not made us enter Paradise and saved us from Fire? He (the narrator) said: He (God) would lift the veil, and of things given to them nothing would be dearer to them than the sight of their Lord, the Mighty and the Glorious.”

Sahih Muslim 181a · Narrated by Suhaib · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this from the Prophet ﷺ. Look at the order of events. The people of Paradise are already inside. Their faces are bright, and they have been saved from the Fire. When Allah asks if they want anything more, they cannot think of anything to ask for. Then the veil is lifted, and the hadith says nothing they were ever given is dearer to them than looking at their Lord.

The Encyclopedia of Translated Prophetic Hadiths explains that seeing their Lord is the greatest bliss of Paradise, and that all its people will see Him, whatever their rank (HadeethEnc 8344). In another chain of the same hadith, Sahih Muslim 181b, the Prophet ﷺ then recited this verse:

۞ لِّلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ وَزِيَادَةٌ ۖ وَلَا يَرْهَقُ وُجُوهَهُمْ قَتَرٌ وَلَا ذِلَّةٌ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ

“For them who have done good is the best [reward] – and extra. No darkness will cover their faces, nor humiliation. Those are companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.”

Surah Yunus 10:26 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

Try this: when you think of Paradise, let your first wish be to see Allah, not only to have what is in it.

2. You will see Him with your own eyes

“You will definitely see your Lord with your own eyes.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 7435 · Narrated by Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah · Translation from Sunnah.com

Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this short hadith. It is plain and direct: the believers will see their Lord, and with their own eyes. Imam al-Bukhari placed it in his Book of Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah). The next narration, also from Jarir, describes how.

Try this: read this hadith once more slowly, and let it be the answer whenever you wonder whether all the effort for the Hereafter is worth it.

3. Like the full moon, and the two prayers tied to it

“Certainly you will see your Lord as you see this moon and you will have no trouble in seeing Him. So if you can avoid missing (through sleep or business, etc.) a prayer before the sunrise (Fajr) and a prayer before sunset (‘Asr), you must do so.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 554 · Narrated by Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) said the Companions were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ on a night of the full moon when he looked up and said this. The comparison is about clarity: just as everyone can see the full moon without pushing or crowding one another, the believers will see their Lord clearly and without difficulty. The Encyclopedia of Translated Prophetic Hadiths explains it this way, and notes that this was said on the fourteenth night of the lunar month (HadeethEnc 5657).

Then, straight after the good news, comes an instruction: do not let anything make you miss the prayer before sunrise and the prayer before sunset, Fajr and Asr. The same explanation says this means guarding them from distraction and praying them fully, at their proper times, and that holding to them is one of the means of reaching the vision of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ then recited this verse:

فَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ ٱلْغُرُوبِ

“So be patient, [O Muḥammad], over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting,”

Surah Qaf 50:39 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

At the end of the narration, Isma’il, one of the narrators, sums it up in two words: offer those prayers and do not miss them.

Try this: look at where Fajr and Asr fall in your day this week. Set one reminder for each, a few minutes before the time, so that sleep or work does not take them.

4. A dua for the delight of seeing His Face

wa as’aluka ladhdhatan-naẓari ilā wajhika wash-shawqa ilā liqā’ika fī ghairi ḍarrā’a muḍirratin wa lā fitnatin muḍillatin

“I ask You for the sweetness of looking upon Your face and a longing to meet You in a manner that does not entail a calamity that will bring about harm or a trial that will cause deviation.”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 1305 · Narrated by ‘Ammar ibn Yasir · Grade: Hasan (Darussalam) · Part of a longer dua; translation from Sunnah.com

‘Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) once led a short prayer, and when people remarked on it, he said he had still recited supplications he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A man followed him and asked about them, and this line is part of the dua he reported. It asks for two things together: the delight of looking at Allah’s Face, and a longing to meet Him that comes without harm or a trial that leads astray.

The full dua, as narrated in Sunan an-Nasa’i 1305, also asks Allah for fear of Him in private and in public, a truthful word in pleasure and in anger, and contentment with His decree. For more duas asking for Paradise itself, see Dua for Jannah: 4 Authentic Duas.

Try this: learn this one line of the dua and add it to your own duas, for example in sujud.

Bringing it together

The Quran describes the same moment. On the Day of Judgment some faces will be bright, and they will be looking at their Lord:

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ

“[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,”

Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:22 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

“Looking at their Lord.”

Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:23 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

Put together, these texts give a clear picture. The believers will see their Lord with their own eyes. It will be clear and easy, like seeing the full moon. And when it happens, it will be dearer to them than everything else they have been given in Paradise.

What it takes

The hadith do not leave this as a hope only. In Sahih al-Bukhari 554 the good news is followed at once by a duty: guard Fajr and Asr. Surah Yunus 10:26 promises the best reward, and more, to “those who have done good”. And the dua of an-Nasa’i 1305 asks Allah for the longing to meet Him. Prayer on time, doing good, and asking Allah: these are the steps these texts point to. For the wider path, see Deeds That Lead to Jannah.

Reflection: the people of Paradise in Sahih Muslim 181a have everything, and still the greatest gift is to see the One who gave it. Perhaps that is a good test for our own hearts: do we love the gifts more, or the Giver?
