Slept through Fajr – there is no negligence in sleep, Arabic from Sunan Abi Dawud 441

Slept Through Fajr? What the Prophet ﷺ Did (Authentic Hadith)

You open your eyes, the room is bright, and your phone says 7:40. Fajr is gone. If you have ever slept through Fajr, you are not the first: it happened to the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions on a journey. Here is what he did next, and what he taught about a missed prayer.

At a glance

  • Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 443 (also Sahih Muslim 681)
  • Narrated by: ‘Imran ibn Husain (may Allah be pleased with him)
  • Grade: Sahih (al-Albani)
  • Topic: Salah: what to do after a missed Fajr
  • Practise it: When you wake and Fajr has passed, make wudu and pray it as soon as you can

The hadith

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a journey. They slept through the Fajr prayer and woke up because of the heat of the sun. They moved on a little until the sun had risen high. Then he ordered the mu’adhdhin to call the adhan, and he prayed two rak’ahs before Fajr. Then the iqamah was given, and he led them in the Fajr prayer.

Sunan Abi Dawud 443 · Sahih (al-Albani) · Narrated by ‘Imran ibn Husain · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

Then Bilal called the adhan for the prayer, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rak’ahs, then prayed the morning prayer, doing as he did every day.

Context

This happened while travelling. In Sahih al-Bukhari 344, ‘Imran describes travelling until the last part of the night, sleeping deeply, and waking only when the sun’s heat reached them. In Sahih Muslim 680a, Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) describes the return from Khaybar, when Bilal stayed up to watch for dawn but was overcome by sleep while leaning against his camel.

Even the Prophet ﷺ and the best generation slept through Fajr. It can happen to anyone.

What the Prophet ﷺ taught about a missed prayer

مَنْ نَسِيَ صَلاَةً فَلْيُصَلِّ إِذَا ذَكَرَهَا، لاَ كَفَّارَةَ لَهَا إِلاَّ ذَلِكَ

The Prophet ﷺ said, “If anyone forgets a prayer he should pray that prayer when he remembers it. There is no expiation except to pray the same.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 597 · Narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) · Also Sahih Muslim 684a

“There is no negligence in sleep. Negligence is only when one is awake: delaying a prayer until the time of the next prayer comes.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 441 · Sahih (al-Albani) · Also Sahih Muslim 681 · Narrated by Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

In Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 177 (Sahih, Darussalam), the same teaching mentions sleep directly: whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it should pray it when he remembers it.

What it means

Reflection: Many of us wake up late and feel the morning is already ruined. The Prophet ﷺ didn’t dwell on it. He called the adhan, prayed the two sunnah rak’ahs, and led Fajr “as he did every day”. The hadith itself draws the line: sleep is not negligence; staying awake and putting the prayer off is.

This isn’t permission to be careless about waking up. Deliberately leaving a prayer, or having many missed prayers to make up, are separate questions, so ask a qualified local scholar about your own situation.

If you slept through Fajr: how to practise it

  • When you wake and realise Fajr has passed, make wudu and pray it as soon as you can (Sahih al-Bukhari 597).
  • Pray it as you normally would. In this hadith the Prophet ﷺ prayed the two sunnah rak’ahs first, then Fajr (see Sunnah of Fajr).
  • Don’t let guilt push you into skipping it altogether; the hadith shows the way back is simply to pray.
  • Take practical steps to wake up: sleep earlier, set an alarm, or ask someone at home to wake you. On the return from Khaybar, the Prophet ﷺ asked Bilal to watch for dawn (Sahih Muslim 680a).
  • For deliberately missed prayers or many prayers to make up, ask a qualified local scholar.
