Rivers of Jannah: What the Quran and Authentic Hadith Say

Water that never goes stale. Milk whose taste never turns. Honey that is pure. The Quran and the Sunnah describe the rivers of Jannah in detail, and the Prophet ﷺ even named rivers in this world that are among them. This article brings together what the Quran and authentic hadith say about them.

In this article:

  • The four kinds of rivers described in the Quran, and the seas they branch from
  • The four rivers of this world that the Prophet ﷺ called rivers of Paradise
  • Al-Kawthar, the river shown to the Prophet ﷺ on the night of his ascent

1. Four kinds of rivers

The clearest description of the rivers of Jannah is in the Quran itself. Allah compares Paradise with the Fire in one verse:

“Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord… [Are its inhabitants] like those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?”

Surah Muhammad 47:15 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

Each river is described by what spoils it in this world. Water goes stale, but these rivers are “unaltered”. Milk turns sour, but its taste “never changes”. Honey can carry wax and impurities, but this honey is “purified”. And wine, which in this world takes away the mind, is described elsewhere in the Quran as free of every harm:

لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنزَفُونَ

“No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.”

Surah As-Saffat 37:47 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

Notice also how the verse ends: alongside every kind of fruit, the people of Paradise are given “forgiveness from their Lord”. The greatest gift in it is not food or drink.

Try this: the next time you drink a glass of cold water, say alhamdulillah and remember that its better is waiting, unaltered, in Jannah.

2. Four seas, and the rivers that branch from them

“Indeed in Paradise there is a sea of water, and a sea of honey, and a sea of milk, and a sea of wine, then the rivers shall split off afterwards.”

Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 2571 · Narrated by Mu‘awiyah ibn Haydah · Grade: Hasan (Darussalam) · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

Hakim ibn Mu‘awiyah narrates this from his father, the Companion Mu‘awiyah ibn Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him). Imam at-Tirmidhi called it hasan sahih. It matches the verse above: the same four drinks, water, honey, milk and wine, each in a great sea, with rivers branching out from them through Paradise.

Where do they flow from? In another authentic hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said that al-Firdaus is the middle and highest part of Paradise, and that the rivers of Paradise gush forth from it. We cover that hadith in Levels of Jannah and al-Firdaus.

Try this: when you ask Allah for Paradise, ask for al-Firdaus, as the Prophet ﷺ taught, the place the rivers come from.

3. Rivers of Paradise in this world

“Saihan, Jaihan, Euphrates and Nile are all among the rivers of Paradise.”

Sahih Muslim 2839 · Narrated by Abu Hurairah · Translation from Sunnah.com

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this short hadith. The Euphrates and the Nile are well known. The Encyclopedia of Translated Prophetic Hadiths renders Saihan and Jaihan as the Jaxartes and the Oxus, two great rivers of Central Asia (Encyclopedia of Translated Prophetic Hadiths).

What does it mean that they are “among the rivers of Paradise”? The same Encyclopedia notes that some scholars took it literally, that these rivers come from Paradise, and explains that when they were placed in this world they took on the nature of worldly rivers. Either way, the hadith gives these rivers an honor, and it reminds us that Paradise is real: the Prophet ﷺ pointed to it through rivers people could see and drink from.

Try this: if you ever see the Nile or the Euphrates, or a picture of them, let it remind you of this hadith and of the rivers that are waiting.

4. Al-Kawthar: the river given to the Prophet ﷺ

“I came upon a river the banks of which were made of tents of hollow pearls. I asked Gabriel: What is this (river)? He replied: This is the Kauthar.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 4964 · Narrated by Anas ibn Malik · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said the Prophet ﷺ described this after he was taken up to the heavens. Imam al-Bukhari placed the hadith in his commentary on Surah al-Kawthar, the shortest surah of the Quran, which opens with this verse:

إِنَّآ أَعْطَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْكَوْثَرَ

“Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muḥammad], al-Kawthar.”

Surah Al-Kawthar 108:1 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

Try this: recite Surah al-Kawthar in one of your prayers today, and remember the river it names.

Bringing it together

The Quran names the four drinks of Paradise and promises that none of them will spoil. At-Tirmidhi 2571 adds that each has its own sea, and that the rivers branch out from them. Sahih Muslim 2839 points to rivers in this world that are among them, and Sahih al-Bukhari 4964 names al-Kawthar, a river of Paradise given to the Prophet ﷺ. Together they show a Paradise that is real, generous and free of everything that spoils the good things of this life.

What it takes

Surah Muhammad 47:15 says plainly who these rivers are for: the Paradise “which the righteous are promised”, people of taqwa who guard themselves from what displeases Allah. The same verse puts forgiveness from their Lord among their gifts. So the way to these rivers is the way of taqwa and seeking forgiveness, the deeds described in Deeds That Lead to Jannah.

Reflection: in this world, everything good has something that spoils it. Water goes stale, milk turns, and even the best moments end. The rivers of Jannah are described by what they are free from, and that is a reminder that the good things here are only a taste.
