Arabic text from Sahih al-Bukhari 6563: protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date

Save Yourself From the Fire, Even With Half a Date

Half a date is almost nothing. It would not fill a child’s hand. Yet the Prophet ﷺ told us it can stand between a person and the Fire. This half a date in charity hadith comes in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from ‘Adi ibn Hatim. Here we look at its wording, the scene on the Day of Judgment that comes with it, what it asks of us, and why it is full of hope.

At a glance

  • Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6563, also in Sahih Muslim 1016a
  • Narrated by: ‘Adi ibn Hatim
  • Grade: Sahih (al-Bukhari and Muslim)
  • Topic: Charity as protection from the Fire
  • Practise it: Give something today, however small, and if you have nothing, give a kind word

The hadith: protect yourselves, even with half a date

‘Adi ibn Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) describes how the Prophet ﷺ mentioned the Fire, turned his face aside and sought Allah’s protection from it. Then he mentioned it again, turned his face aside again and sought refuge again. Then he said:

“Protect yourselves from the Hell-Fire, even if with one half of a date, and he who cannot afford that, then (let him do so) by (saying) a good, pleasant word.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6563 · Narrated by ‘Adi ibn Hatim · Translation from Sunnah.com

Imam Muslim records it from ‘Adi too, in these words:

مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَسْتَتِرَ مِنَ النَّارِ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ

“He who among you can protect himself against Fire, he should do so, even if it should be with half a date.”

Sahih Muslim 1016a · Narrated by ‘Adi ibn Hatim · Translation from Sunnah.com

Al-Bukhari also has the short form in Sahih al-Bukhari 1417, in his book of zakah: “Save yourself from Hell-fire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity.”

Take heed: the Prophet ﷺ turned his face away twice just at the mention of the Fire. If he sought refuge from it like this, we have far more reason to fear it.

The scene: standing alone before Allah

In another narration from ‘Adi, the Prophet ﷺ describes the moment when this advice will matter most:

“There will be none among you but will be talked to by Allah on the Day of Resurrection, without there being an interpreter between him and Him (Allah). He will look and see nothing ahead of him, and then he will look (again for the second time) in front of him, and the (Hell) Fire will confront him. So, whoever among you can save himself from the Fire, should do so even with one half of a date (to give in charity).”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6539 · Narrated by ‘Adi ibn Hatim · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

HadeethEnc (hadith 6615) explains this scene: each person stands alone before Allah, with no intermediary. He looks to his right and sees only the deeds he sent ahead, looks to his left and sees only the deeds he sent ahead, and in front of him there is nothing but the Fire, which he must pass over. So the Prophet ﷺ told us to put a shield between ourselves and the Fire through charity and good deeds, even something as small as half a date.

Take heed: on that Day no one will stand beside us and speak for us. What we send ahead now is all we will see.

What it means: no good deed is too small

The same HadeethEnc explanation draws out the lessons: the hadith urges charity, good character, gentle treatment of people and kind speech, and a believer should never look down on anything he gives, even if it is little, because it is a protection from the Fire.

The second half of Sahih al-Bukhari 6563 matters just as much. The one who has nothing to give is not left without a shield: a good, pleasant word is enough. So no one is excluded from this hadith, rich or poor.

Allah tells us to do what we are able to:

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُمْ وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ وَأَطِيعُوا۟ وَأَنفِقُوا۟ خَيْرًا لِّأَنفُسِكُمْ ۗ وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

“So fear Allāh as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allāh]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul – it is those who will be the successful.”

Surah At-Taghabun 64:16 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

Small daily deeds count as charity in many authentic hadith. See Every Tasbih Is Charity and Charity for Every Joint, Every Day.

How to practise it

  • Give something small, often. The hadith names half a date, not a large sum. A coin in a donation box or a small online transfer is a start.
  • Don’t wait until you have more. The hadith speaks to everyone who “can” protect himself, whatever he has.
  • Use your words. If you have nothing to give, say something good and kind. The hadith counts it.
  • Give for Allah alone. Give quietly where you can, seeking only His pleasure.
  • Make it a habit. The hadith does not set a time or amount, so choose one that suits you, such as a little every Friday.

Hope: Allah sees every atom of good

This hadith is a warning, but it is also one of the most hopeful in the Sunnah. If half a date can shield a person from the Fire, then no believer should think their good is too small to matter. Allah says:

“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,”

Surah Az-Zalzalah 99:7 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

“And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”

Surah Az-Zalzalah 99:8 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

Every small act is seen and counted. And Allah multiplies good deeds far beyond their size, as the hadith qudsi in Good Deeds Multiplied, Bad Deeds Counted Once shows.

Reflection: the Prophet ﷺ chose half a date, something anyone in Madinah could find. He did not set the bar where only the wealthy could reach it. The door to protection from the Fire is open to every one of us, today, with whatever we have in our hands or on our tongues.
