Be Mindful of Allah and He Will Protect You: Hadith 19
Some of the most important advice in Islam was given to a young boy riding behind the Prophet ﷺ. In Hadith 19 of Imam an-Nawawi’s collection, he taught Ibn ‘Abbas a few short words: be mindful of Allah and He will protect you, ask Allah alone, and know that nothing reaches you except what Allah has written. Here is the hadith, what it means, and how it can steady our hearts today.

The hadith
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I was behind the Prophet ﷺ one day when he said: ‘O boy! I will teach you a statement:'”
“Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah, and when you seek aid, seek Allah’s aid. Know that if the entire creation were to gather together to do something to benefit you, you would never get any benefit except that Allah had written for you. And if they were to gather to do something to harm you, you would never be harmed except that Allah had written for you. The pens are lifted and the pages are dried.”
Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 2516 · Narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas · Grade: Hasan (Darussalam) · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com
At-Tirmidhi called it hasan sahih, and HadeethEnc grades it authentic. Imam an-Nawawi placed it as Hadith 19 of his 40 Hadith. He also mentions a longer wording reported outside at-Tirmidhi; this article stays with at-Tirmidhi’s graded wording above.
Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you
The Encyclopedia of Translated Prophetic Hadiths (HadeethEnc) explains that being mindful of Allah means keeping His commands and avoiding what He has forbidden, so that He finds you in worship and good deeds, not in sin. The reward matches the deed: Allah protects you from what you dislike in this world and the next, and supports you wherever you go. HadeethEnc also notes the other side: whoever neglects Allah’s commands loses that protection.
Ask Allah alone, seek help from Allah alone
If you need something, ask Allah, because He alone answers those who ask. If you need help, seek it from Allah. This is the heart of tawakkul, relying on Allah. Allah says:
“And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allāh – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allāh will accomplish His purpose. Allāh has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.”
Surah at-Talaq 65:3 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com
Relying on Allah does not mean doing nothing. We still take the means He has given us, while knowing that the result is in His hands. One of the dhikr that expresses this is la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.
The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried
HadeethEnc explains that no benefit can reach you, even if everyone on earth gathered to bring it, unless Allah has written it for you; and no harm can touch you, even if everyone gathered to cause it, unless Allah has written it. Allah has written all things by His wisdom and knowledge, and what He has written does not change. We met the same truth in Hadith 4, on what is written for every person.
Among the benefits HadeethEnc lists: the importance of teaching children about tawhid and good character, that the reward is of the same kind as the deed, that we must rely on Allah alone, and that we must believe in and be content with Allah’s decree.
Reflection: the Prophet ﷺ gave this advice to a boy, not to a gathering of scholars. These are the first words worth teaching our children: that Allah is near, that He is the One to ask, and that people cannot change what He has written. A child who learns this early carries a kind of calm into everything that comes later.
How to put it into practice
The hadith does not give a routine, so these are suggestions:
- Keep Allah’s limits in what you do and avoid, especially in private.
- Make dua first when you need something, before turning to people.
- Take the means, then rely on Allah for the outcome.
- Stay calm with what is written: no one can harm or benefit you beyond what Allah has decreed.
- Teach these words to your children, as the Prophet ﷺ taught them to Ibn ‘Abbas.

Key lessons
- Be mindful of Allah’s commands, and He will protect you.
- Ask Allah alone, and seek help from Allah alone.
- Nothing reaches you except what Allah has written.
- Relying on Allah goes together with taking the means.
- Teach children tawhid early.
