Dua for Protection From Hellfire: 4 Authentic Duas

After reading about the Fire, the natural question is: what can I say to be protected from it? The Prophet ﷺ taught us exactly that. This article gathers four authentic dua for protection from hellfire: the one he made most often, the one he made against the trials of the Fire, a simple dua for Paradise and against the Fire that he approved, and a dua Allah praises in the Quran. Each comes with its source, so you can make it with confidence.

  • Collections: Sahih al-Bukhari, Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi
  • Grade: Sahih (al-Bukhari; al-Albani; Darussalam)
  • Topic: Seeking Allah’s protection from the Fire
  • One thing to do today: Learn the first dua below and say it three times today

1. The dua he made most often

Allahumma rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.

“O Allah! Give to us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6389 · Narrated by Anas ibn Malik · Translation from Sunnah.com

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said this was the Prophet’s ﷺ most frequent supplication. It is also a verse of the Quran (2:201). HadeethEnc (hadith 5502) explains that “good in this world” includes lawful provision, a righteous spouse, children who bring joy, beneficial knowledge and good deeds, and “good in the Hereafter” includes safety from the punishment of the grave and the Fire and Allah’s pleasure. It notes that it is recommended to make short, comprehensive duas like this one.

Take heed: the Prophet ﷺ, whose past and future sins were forgiven, still asked for protection from the Fire more than anything else. We have far more need to ask.

2. Refuge from the trial and punishment of the Fire

“O Allah! I seek refuge with You from laziness and geriatric old age, from all kinds of sins and from being in debt; from the trial and affliction of the grave and from the punishment in the grave; from the affliction of the Fire and from the punishment of the Fire; and from the evil of the affliction of wealth; and I seek refuge with You from the affliction of poverty, and I seek refuge with You from the affliction of Al-Mesiah Ad-Dajjal. O Allah! Wash away my sins with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart from all the sins as a white garment is cleansed from the filth, and let there be a long distance between me and my sins, as You made East and West far from each other.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6368 · Narrated by ‘A’ishah · Translation from Sunnah.com

‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said the Prophet ﷺ used to say this dua. Notice that he sought refuge from two things: the fitnah of the Fire, the trials and sins that lead to it, and its punishment. He then asked Allah to wash his sins away, because sins are what bring a person near the Fire.

Take heed: the road to the Fire begins with small sins left unwashed. Ask Allah to cleanse them before they pile up.

3. A simple dua for Paradise and against the Fire

Allahumma inni as’alukal-jannah, wa a‘udhu bika minan-nar.

“O Allah, I ask Thee for Paradise, and I seek refuge in Thee from Hell-Fire.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 792 · Narrated by some Companions of the Prophet ﷺ · Grade: Sahih (al-Albani) · Translation from Sunnah.com

The Prophet ﷺ asked a man what he said in his prayer. The man said he recited the tashahhud and then this short dua, adding that he could not match the long supplications of the Prophet ﷺ and Mu‘adh. The Prophet ﷺ replied: “We too go around it (paradise and Hell-fire).” In other words, everything he prayed for came back to these two things. Ibn Majah records it from Abu Hurairah as well (Sunan Ibn Majah 3847, Sahih, Darussalam).

If you want the fuller duas the Prophet ﷺ made after the tashahhud, including refuge from the punishment of Hell, see Dua to Recite After Tashahhud and Its Amazing Reward.

Take heed: a short dua made with sincerity is not too small. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that his own long duas revolved around the same two requests.

4. The dua of the servants of the Most Merciful

Allah describes His true servants in Surah al-Furqan, and among their qualities is this dua:

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا ٱصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا

“And those who say, “Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;”

Surah Al-Furqan 25:65 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

“Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence.””

Surah Al-Furqan 25:66 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com

You can make this dua in its Quranic words, Rabbana-srif ‘anna ‘adhaba jahannam, in your own supplications outside the recitation of salah.

How often should you ask?

“Whoever asks Allah (s.w.t) Paradise three times, Paradise says: ‘O Allah, admit him into Paradise’, and whoever seeks refuge from the Fire three times, the Fire says: ‘O Allah, save him from the Fire.’”

Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 2572 · Narrated by Anas ibn Malik · Grade: Sahih (Darussalam) · Translation from Sunnah.com

Ibn Majah has the same hadith (Sunan Ibn Majah 4340, Sahih, Darussalam). The hadith does not name a fixed time, so you might ask three times after a prayer, or before you sleep. Any of the duas above can be used.

Many people say “Allahumma ajirni min an-nar” seven times after Maghrib and Fajr, based on a narration in Sunan Abi Dawud 5079. Sunnah.com shows it as Da‘if (weak), al-Albani, so we do not present it as an authentic practice with a promised reward. Asking Allah for protection from the Fire in these words is still a good dua in itself; it is the specific number and reward that are not established. The authentic duas above are enough.

Hope: Allah answers those who ask

Every one of these duas is a sign of Allah’s mercy. He did not only warn us about the Fire; He taught us what to say to be saved from it, and through His Messenger ﷺ He told us that the Fire itself asks Allah to protect the one who seeks refuge from it.

Reflection: the Prophet ﷺ told the man who could only manage a short dua that he too prayed around Paradise and the Fire. Whatever our level of knowledge or eloquence, the door is the same for all of us: ask Allah sincerely, ask often, and keep asking.

Questions people ask

What is the best dua for protection from Hellfire?

The dua the Prophet ﷺ made most often: “Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina ‘adhaban-nar” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6389), which is also Quran 2:201.

How many times should I ask Allah to save me from the Fire?

Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 2572 (Sahih, Darussalam) says whoever seeks refuge from the Fire three times, the Fire asks Allah to protect him. No fixed time is given.

Is “Allahumma ajirni min an-nar” seven times authentic?

The narration in Sunan Abi Dawud 5079 is graded Da‘if (weak) by al-Albani. Asking for protection in those words is fine as a general dua, but the specific number and reward are not established.

  • A short sincere dua for Paradise and against the Fire is enough; his own duas revolved around it (Abu Dawud 792).
  • Ask three times: the Fire itself asks Allah to protect the one who seeks refuge (at-Tirmidhi 2572).
  • The “seven times after Maghrib” narration is weak; stick to what is authentic.
