Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah: Benefits and Meaning
“Two lights that no prophet before you was given.” That is how an angel described Surah al-Fatihah and the closing verses of Surah Al-Baqarah when he came down to the Prophet ﷺ. Here are the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah in Arabic and English, what they mean, and the authentic hadiths on why so many Muslims recite them every night.

The hadith
الآيَتَانِ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ مَنْ قَرَأَ بِهِمَا فِي لَيْلَةٍ كَفَتَاهُ
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The two verses at the end of Surah al-Baqarah: whoever recites them at night, they will suffice him.”

The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah
ءَامَنَ ٱلرَّسُولُ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِن رَّبِّهِۦ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۚ كُلٌّ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتِهِۦ وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَرُسُلِهِۦ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّن رُّسُلِهِۦ ۚ وَقَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۖ غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ
The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allāh and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.”

لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا ٱكْتَسَبَتْ ۗ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَآ إِن نَّسِينَآ أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَآ إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِۦ ۖ وَٱعْفُ عَنَّا وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَآ ۚ أَنتَ مَوْلَىٰنَا فَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. “Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.”

Two lights never given to any prophet before
أَبْشِرْ بِنُورَيْنِ أُوتِيتَهُمَا لَمْ يُؤْتَهُمَا نَبِيٌّ قَبْلَكَ فَاتِحَةُ الْكِتَابِ وَخَوَاتِيمُ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ لَنْ تَقْرَأَ بِحَرْفٍ مِنْهُمَا إِلاَّ أُعْطِيتَهُ
“Rejoice in two lights given to you which were not given to any prophet before you: the Opening of the Book and the closing verses of Surah al-Baqarah. You will not recite a letter of them without being given it.”

These verses are also one of three gifts the Prophet ﷺ was given on the Night Journey, together with the five daily prayers and forgiveness of major sins for those of his Ummah who die without associating anything with Allah (Sahih Muslim 173).
What “they will suffice him” means
The hadith does not say in what way the verses suffice. Scholars have explained it in more than one way, such as protection from harm that night. Whatever the exact meaning, the encouragement is clear: recite them every night.
What the verses say
- The Messenger has believed, and so have the believers: a checklist of faith in Allah, His angels, His books and His messengers. We leave none of them out.
- “We make no distinction between any of His messengers”: we believe in all of them.
- “We hear and we obey”: the believer’s answer to Allah’s commands, followed straight away by asking for forgiveness.
- Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity: whatever we are carrying, Allah knows we can bear it. Take comfort in that.
- The closing dua: do not blame us if we forget or err; do not lay on us a burden like those before us; do not burden us beyond our strength; pardon us, forgive us, have mercy on us, and give us victory.
How to practise it
- Recite them every night. The hadith says “at night” without fixing a time. Many people recite them after Isha or just before sleeping.
- Memorise them with the recitation above, one verse at a time.
- Make verse 286 your own dua. Its last part is a complete dua for forgiveness, mercy and help.
- Build a night routine: add the three Quls before sleeping and Ayatul Kursi.
