Successful is the one who accepted Islam, was given enough and was made content by Allah, the hadith of qana'ah from Sahih Muslim 1054

Qana’ah Meaning: Contentment in Islam, the Cure for Envy

Imagine scrolling through social media: luxurious vacations, designer outfits, picture-perfect lives. A familiar pang of envy tugs at your heart. “Why can’t I have that?” Islam offers a quiet answer to this age-old struggle: qana’ah. Here is its meaning, the hadith behind it, and how to grow it in your own heart.

  • Put it into practice: In worldly things, look at those who have less than you

What does qana’ah mean?

Qana’ah is an Arabic word usually translated as contentment or being satisfied. It is more than accepting our situation. It is a deep understanding that happiness does not come from chasing more, but from being at peace with what Allah has given us and trusting His plan.

The Prophet ﷺ described the person who has it as truly successful:

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ أَسْلَمَ وَرُزِقَ كَفَافًا وَقَنَّعَهُ اللَّهُ بِمَا آتَاهُ

Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “He is successful who has accepted Islam, who has been provided with sufficient for his want and been made contented by Allah with what He has given him.”

Sahih Muslim 1054 · Narrated by ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

The word used for “made contented” comes from the same root as qana’ah. Success is not having the most; it is having enough and being content with it.

The hadith on qana’ah: look at those below you

Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “When one of you looks at one who stands at a higher level than you in regard to wealth and physical structure he should also see one who stands at a lower level than you in regard to these things (in which he stands) at a higher level (as compared to him).”

Sahih Muslim 2963a · Narrated by Abu Hurairah · Translation from Sunnah.com

Another narration gives the reason: look at those below you and not those above you, “for that is better-suited that you do not disparage Allah’s favors” (Sahih Muslim 2963c).

So the Prophet ﷺ advises us to look both ways when we see people who have more than us. This soothes our yearning for more, as we reflect on the abundance we have compared with people who have less. Working hard to earn is not wrong, but being envious of those who have been given more is not good for the heart.

True wealth is in the heart

لَيْسَ الْغِنَى عَنْ كَثْرَةِ الْعَرَضِ، وَلَكِنَّ الْغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Wealth is not in having many possessions, but rather (true) wealth is feeling sufficiency in the soul.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6446 · Narrated by Abu Hurairah · Translation from Sunnah.com

A person with a lot can still feel poor if their heart always wants more, and a person with little can feel rich if their heart is content. Qana’ah is that inner richness.

Counting the blessings of Allah

Allah reminds us that His blessings are beyond counting, and that people are often ungrateful:

وَءَاتَىٰكُم مِّن كُلِّ مَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُ ۚ وَإِن تَعُدُّوا۟ نِعْمَتَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحْصُوهَآ ۗ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَظَلُومٌ كَفَّارٌ

And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor [i.e., blessings] of Allāh, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.

Surah Ibrahim 14:34 · Translation: Saheeh International (Quran.com)

Let’s reform ourselves and start counting those blessings, and may Allah place us with those who are grateful to Him.

How to cultivate qana’ah in daily life

  • Plant gratitude: notice the simple joys, a warm cup of coffee, laughter with loved ones, and say Alhamdulillah for them.
  • Remember feeds are not reality: social media shows highlight reels; everyone has struggles you do not see.
  • Look at those with less whenever you catch yourself comparing upwards.
  • Trust Allah’s plan and ask Him in your dua to make you content with what He has given you.
  • Give to others; helping someone in need reminds you how much you already have.

What is the hadith about qana’ah?

Look at those who are below you and not at those above you, so that you do not belittle Allah’s favors (Sahih Muslim 2963c); and true wealth is richness of the soul (Sahih al-Bukhari 6446).
