Duha prayer hadith card from Sahih Muslim 748: the prayer of the penitent

Duha Prayer Hadith: 5 Authentic Hadith on Salat al-Duha

Mid-morning is easy to waste: the rush of the commute is over, lunch is still far away, and the hours slip by. Is the Duha prayer really worth fitting into that gap? This Duha prayer hadith collection answers with five authentic narrations: what the Prophet ﷺ advised, what two short rak‘ahs are worth, and when the best time to pray them is.

Duha is a voluntary prayer offered after the sun has risen and before Dhuhr. It is often paired with fasting three days a month and witr, as in our 3 Daily Sunnahs the Prophet ﷺ Advised; here the focus is on Duha alone.

  • Do it today: Pray two rak‘ahs of Duha before Dhuhr, even if they are short

1. The advice the Prophet ﷺ gave Abu Hurairah

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) named three things the Prophet ﷺ advised him to keep for life, and Duha is one of them.

“My friend (the Prophet ﷺ) advised me to do three things and I shall not leave them till I die: to fast three days every month, to offer the Duha prayer, and to offer witr before sleeping.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 1178 · Narrated by Abu Hurairah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

Abu Hurairah kept these three until his death. In Sahih Muslim 721a the same advice names “two rak‘ahs of Duha”. HadeethEnc cites Ibn Daqiq al-‘Id, who said that two rak‘ahs may be the least with which the deed is fulfilled, and that the hadith shows Duha is a recommended prayer.

Try this: write the three on a sticky note (three fasts a month, Duha, witr) and tick off Duha each day this week.

2. Two rak‘ahs that cover your daily charity

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported how the Prophet ﷺ described a charity due every morning, and how two rak‘ahs of Duha are enough for it.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “In the morning charity is due from every bone in the body of every one of you. Every utterance of Allah’s glorification is an act of charity, every utterance of praise of Him is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Oneness is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Greatness is an act of charity, enjoining good is an act of charity, forbidding what is disreputable is an act of charity, and two rak‘ahs which one prays in the forenoon will suffice.”

Sahih Muslim 720 · Narrated by Abu Dharr · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

Every joint of the body owes a charity each day, and the hadith lists easy ways to pay it: a tasbih, a word of praise, a good deed. Then it gives one act that covers all of it: two rak‘ahs of Duha. We go through this hadith in detail in Charity for Every Joint, Every Day.

Try this: on a day when you feel you have done little good, pray two rak‘ahs of Duha and remember that this hadith counts them as enough.

3. Four rak‘ahs, and Allah suffices you for the day

Nu‘aym ibn Hammar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Prophet ﷺ convey these words from Allah, a hadith qudsi.

“Allah, the Exalted, says: Son of Adam, do not be helpless in performing four rak‘ahs for Me at the beginning of the day: I will supply what you need till the end of it.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 1289 · Sahih (al-Albani) · Narrated by Nu‘aym ibn Hammar · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

The same promise is reported in Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 475, graded Sahih (Darussalam), and at-Tirmidhi placed it in his chapter on the Duha prayer. Four rak‘ahs early in the day, and in return Allah takes care of what the rest of the day brings.

Try this: on a busy day, pray the four rak‘ahs before you open your messages, and hand the rest of the day to Allah.

4. Duha prayer time: when the sun has grown hot

Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) saw people praying early in the forenoon and said they knew a later hour was better, then quoted the Prophet ﷺ.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The prayer of those who are penitent is observed when your weaned camels feel the heat of the sun.”

Sahih Muslim 748a · Narrated by Zayd ibn Arqam · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

The young camels lift their feet from the burning sand once the sun is high. HadeethEnc explains that this is the best time for the Duha prayer of those who often return to Allah. HadeethEnc adds that scholars placed it about halfway between sunrise and Dhuhr, and that the Duha time itself starts a little after sunrise and lasts until shortly before noon.

Try this: look up today’s sunrise and Dhuhr times and set a reminder for the midpoint between them.

5. How many rak‘ahs the Prophet ﷺ prayed

Mu‘adhah asked ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) a simple question, and her answer leaves room for each of us.

How many rak‘ahs did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray at the forenoon prayer? She replied: “Four rak‘ahs, but sometimes more as he pleased.”

Sahih Muslim 719a · Narrated by ‘A’ishah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com

Two rak‘ahs are named in Muslim 720 and 721, four in this hadith and in Abu Dawud 1289, and the Prophet ﷺ sometimes prayed more. The hadith do not fix an upper number here; how scholars weigh the different narrations is a fiqh discussion, so ask a qualified local scholar if you need the details.

Try this: start with two rak‘ahs. Once they feel natural, try four.

Bringing it together: salat al-Duha benefits

Put together, these hadith show a prayer that is small in effort and large in reward: a sunnah the Prophet ﷺ advised for life, a charity for every joint, Allah’s care for the rest of the day, and a best time when the sun has grown hot.

Reflection: Duha falls at the hour when most of us are deepest in work. Perhaps that is part of its value. Stepping away for a few minutes, right when the world feels most demanding, is a quiet way of saying that our provision and our day belong to Allah, not to the to-do list.

Questions people ask

What is the reward of the Ishraq prayer?

A popular narration says that whoever prays Fajr in congregation, sits remembering Allah until sunrise, then prays two rak‘ahs, gets the reward of a complete Hajj and ‘Umrah. It is in Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 586, graded Da‘if (Darussalam) on Sunnah.com, so we do not use it here. The authentic hadith above already show the great reward of praying in the forenoon.

How many rak‘ahs is the Duha prayer?

At least two: Muslim 720 says two rak‘ahs of the forenoon are enough for the daily charity, and Muslim 721a names two. ‘A’ishah reported that the Prophet ﷺ prayed four and sometimes more (Muslim 719a).

What is the best time for Duha prayer?

Sahih Muslim 748 points to the time when the sun has grown hot. HadeethEnc explains this as about halfway between sunrise and Dhuhr.

Is Duha the same as Salat al-Awwabin?

In Sahih Muslim 748 the Prophet ﷺ calls the forenoon prayer “the prayer of the awwabin”, those who often turn back to Allah.
