Importance of Jummah Prayer: What the Hadith Say
Contents
Just after midday on a Friday, the call to prayer rises and the whole day changes: shops pull their shutters down, offices empty, and the masjid fills to its doors. Why does one prayer reshape the week? The importance of Jummah prayer (Jumu‘ah) comes from a direct command in the Quran and from clear words of the Prophet ﷺ, words that carry both a promise and a warning.
Below are one verse and three authentic hadith on why Jummah matters, what it brings, and what the Prophet ﷺ warned about neglecting it. The wider sunnahs of Friday are in our 5 Dos for Muslims on Friday, and the things to avoid are in the Five Don’ts.

1. The command: hurry to the remembrance of Allah
Jummah is one of the few prayers named in the Quran, in a surah that carries its name.
O you who have believed, when [the adhān] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumuʿah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allāh and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
Surah al-Jumu‘ah 62:9 · Translation: Saheeh International, from Quran.com
The verse speaks straight to the believers and gives two instructions: when the call is made, go to the remembrance of Allah, and leave trade. Business is named because Friday midday is a busy time for many people, and the verse makes clear which comes first. It ends by reminding us that this is better for us, even when it does not feel that way in the moment.
Try this: look at your work or study plans before Friday and block out the time for Jummah, travel included, so a meeting or a sale never decides for you.
2. Jummah prayer is a duty on every adult
Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, reported his words about who must go to Jummah.
رَوَاحُ الْجُمُعَةِ وَاجِبٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُحْتَلِمٍ
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Going to Jumu‘ah is obligatory for everyone who has reached the age of puberty.”
Sunan an-Nasa’i 1371 · Sahih (Darussalam) · Narrated by Hafsah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com
The word used is wajib, a duty, and the person meant is the muhtalim, one who has reached puberty. So the duty begins with adulthood, not with old age or a settled life. Explaining a related hadith, HadeethEnc notes that Ibn al-Mundhir reported scholarly agreement that the Friday prayer is an individual obligation.
Who is excused, and when, is a question of fiqh that scholars discuss in detail. For your own situation, ask a qualified local scholar.
Try this: if a teenager at home has just reached adulthood, invite them to come with you this Friday and make it a habit you share.
3. Forgiveness from one Friday to the next
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported a promise for the one who prepares for Jummah and gives it his full attention.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “He who took a bath and then came for Jumu‘ah prayer and then prayed what was fixed for him, then kept silence till the Imam finished the sermon, and then prayed along with him, his sins between that time and the next Friday would be forgiven, and even of three days more.”
Sahih Muslim 857a · Narrated by Abu Hurairah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com
The hadith lists simple steps: a bath, coming to the prayer, praying what one is able to, keeping silent until the sermon ends, then praying with the imam. The reward is forgiveness for the days between two Fridays, and three more. HadeethEnc explains that this covers minor sins over ten days, because each good deed is multiplied ten times, and that idle activity during the khutbah, even playing with pebbles, takes away from the full reward.
Try this: switch your phone off, not just to silent, before you sit down, so nothing pulls your attention away from the khutbah.
4. The warning for those who neglect Jummah
Abdullah ibn Umar and Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them) heard the Prophet ﷺ say these words from the steps of his pulpit.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “People must cease to neglect the Friday prayer or Allah will seal their hearts and then they will be among the negligent.”
Sahih Muslim 865 · Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar and Abu Hurairah · Translation adapted from Sunnah.com
Only two outcomes are given: people stop neglecting Jummah, or Allah seals their hearts. HadeethEnc explains the seal as a covering that keeps the heart from following the truth, so the person drifts into heedlessness and loses interest in worship. It also quotes an-Nawawi, who said the hadith shows that the Friday prayer is an individual obligation.
The warning is about neglect out of laziness or carelessness. A related hadith speaks of missing three Fridays this way; we cover it in the Five Don’ts for Muslims on Friday.
Try this: if you have missed Jummah without a reason, turn to Allah in sincere repentance and set a reminder for Thursday night so the next one does not slip past.
Bringing it together: the importance of Jummah prayer
Side by side, these texts give a clear picture. The Quran commands us to go when the call is made, an-Nasa’i’s hadith makes it a duty for every adult, Muslim 857 shows how generous the reward is, and Muslim 865 warns what neglect does to the heart.
Reflection: the warning was given from the pulpit without naming anyone, and HadeethEnc draws the lesson that advice without names is more easily accepted. Perhaps that is also an invitation to hear it as being about ourselves. The danger is rarely one missed Friday; it is slowly getting used to missing it.
Questions people ask
What does the hadith say about missing Jummah?
Sahih Muslim 865 warns that people who neglect the Friday prayer risk having their hearts sealed. Abu Dawud 1052, graded Hasan Sahih by al-Albani, says that whoever leaves three Fridays out of slackness, Allah puts a seal on his heart. HadeethEnc notes that the warning does not include someone with a valid excuse. See also the Five Don’ts for Muslims on Friday.
Does Jummah prayer forgive sins?
Yes. Sahih Muslim 857 promises forgiveness between one Friday and the next, plus three days, for the one who bathes, comes, prays what he can and listens in silence. HadeethEnc explains that this refers to minor sins.
Who is excused from Jummah prayer?
An-Nasa’i 1371 makes Jummah a duty for every adult, and HadeethEnc notes that the warning does not cover someone with a valid excuse. Who counts as excused is a fiqh question with detailed rules, so please ask a qualified local scholar.
